Pinatubo goes clear to win in great style at Goodwood

Pinatubo, one of the most exciting horses in training, is bang on course for the Group 1 Goffs Vincent O'Brien National Stakes at the Curragh, one of four Group 1 races to take place on the second day of Longines Irish Champions Weekend.

Pinatubo will be fancied to light up the track on September 15, having won his four starts with considerable ease for Godolphin and trainer Charlie Appleby.

The trainer and owner combined to take the race 12 months ago with Quorto but even that colt has not achieved nearly the hype that goes with Pinatubo at this stage.

The son of Shamardal produced an extraordinary performance when last seen at Glorious Goodwood, winning the Qatar Vintage Stakes by five lengths.

Appleby said: "We are on track, all is well with Pinatubo and this race has always been our aim.

"He has been pleasing us at home and really the only issue might be if the ground were very testing, but he handled conditions fine at Goodwood and he should be all systems go for the Curragh.

"He has the perfect profile to now be going into Group 1 company and, four from four, obviously he is exciting. He is spot on temperamentally and it was nice to win the race again. We won it last year with Quorto and (Godolphin) had last won the race with his dad, Dubawi.

"This is going to be a race with at least two exciting colts as Ger Lyons' Siskin has looked very good and he will probably be happier on a decent surface even though he won on testing ground last time. It was fantastic to win this race last year and I'm really looking forward to it, with Pinatubo hopefully on course for the Dewhurst at Newmarket after it."

The Goffs Vincent O'Brien National Stakes has gone to some of the great names in racing, including Sinndar, Dubawi, George Washington and New Approach.
