Cross Counter

Cross Counter is bang on course in his attempt to provide Charlie Appleby with another Longines Irish Champions Weekend success in the Comer Group International Irish St Leger tomorrow week.

Appleby and Godolphin teamed up 12 months ago at the Curragh with Quorto in the Group 1 Goffs Vincent O'Brien National Stakes, a race they are targeting with Pinatubo this year.

And he will be joined on the boat over by Cross Counter, who is aiming for his first Group 1 win in the Curragh Classic.

The son of Teofilo entered racing immortality when taking the Melbourne Cup last year and two excellent performances at the top level behind Stradivarius this summer advertised that he is as consistent and as well as ever.

Appleby said: "Cross Counter is fit and well and he has produced two solid performances since winning in Dubai in March.

"You have Stradivarius, Dee Ex Bee and Cross Counter finishing in the first three at Goodwood and they are the established stayers this side of the water. When they bring their 'A' game, it is cracking staying racing.

"Cross Counter has been really consistent. The Melbourne Cup can be really tough on horses but he has kept performing.

"Dropping back in distance does not worry me at the Curragh: he held the track record around Goodwood over a mile and a half."
